Employment practices, including employees earning less than £7.65/hour

The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act
2000 for information relating to college employment practices. I
would like to know the following, as of November 2013:

1. The number of staff currently employed by the college, whether
full time or part time, being paid under £7.65 an hour (excluding
benefits).
2. The number of staff employed by the college who are working on
zero-hours contracts (i.e. staff who are ‘on call’ but have no
contractually set hours of work).
3. The number of staff employed, if any, who have opted out of the
Working Time Regulations and work, or have worked, for more than 48
hours per week for the college.
4. Whether the college sub-contracts any external employment
agencies to provide staff, and if so the names of these agencies
and (if you hold the information) the number of outsourced staff
who are paid below £7.65 per hour.

Thank you very much for your assistance with this request. If you
would like any clarification of the information I have asked for,
please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to receiving
your response.

Yours faithfully,

P Brady

Dear Mr Brady,

I refer to your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act dated 22nd November 2013.  I am the Freedom of Information Officer at
Trinity College, Cambridge.

1) College pay scales are reviewed twice per year and any agreed increases
applied as from 1 July or 1 February each year.  As of November 2013, the
pay rate for fifty College staff equated to less than £7.65 per hour if
benefits (housing allowance; employer pension contributions; free medical
and dental insurance) are discounted.

2) There are no staff employed by the College on contracts where they are
"on call" and required to accept work if it is offered. Thirty members of
catering staff have casual contracts where work is offered from time to
time, but there is no obligation to accept any offer made.

3) No member of staff has opted out of the Working Time Regulations and
has worked, or is working, more than 48 hours per week for the College.

4) The College contracts temporary and casual staff from agencies as
below. To fulfil the College's legal obligations such agencies are
informed of the rates paid by the College for comparable work by permanent
staff.

For non-catering staff:
University of Cambridge Temporary Employment Service
Interaction
Hays
We understand that any such staff employed during or since November have
been paid more than £7.65 per hour

For catering staff
Select Hospitality
Because of the variable numbers of  differing staff provided by the
agency, it is not known how many may have been paid less than £7.65 per
hour during or since November 2013.

Yours sincerely,

Rory Landman
