Employer Information for Universal Credit Claimants

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

As a welfare rights adviser I often assist Universal Credit claimants with Real Time Information disputes, for example when ex employers falsely report that the claimants is still receiving a wage.

I often find that it is difficult to get information out of the DWP re the name of the employer - even when the claimant themselves request this information directly. In the past I have spoken to claimants who have been forced to submit a formal Subject Access Request to get this information.

1. Please explain why the name of a claimant's employer is not visibly listed anywhere on their online Universal Credit account.

2. Specifically, why is the name employer not listed alongside the "earnings reported by your employer" section of the monthly payment calculation.

3. Please explain why the DWP seem reluctant to share the name of the employer even when this is requested directly by a claimant.

Yours faithfully,
Stephen Campbell

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

Your response states: "One of the principles of Universal Credit (UC) is that we only gather and keep information that is necessary to calculate and pay a claimant’s UC entitlement. The name of the employer is not a requirement to calculate a claimant’s UC award and therefore, it is not gathered and the name of the employer cannot be displayed."

I am sorry, but this is factually incorrect. I recently made a Subject Access Request to obtain documents relating my own past benefits claim(s). The documents I received show the name of my employer(s) is indeed held in Universal Credit system - they are simply not displayed anywhere on the Universal Credit account.

I must therefore ask again why this information is not displayed on the Universal Credit account and why it appears that the DWP is reluctant to share this information when it is directly requested by a claimant.

Yours faithfully,
Stephen Campbell
