Dear Emily,
This response has been prepared in line with the Authority’s obligations
under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (‘FOIA’).
Your exact request was:
“Please could you give me information on the total number of embryos
currently in cryopreserved storage in the UK?”
The HFEA holds some information relevant to your request.
However, as the information held by the HFEA is in the public domain, I
will refer you to the published source under Section 21 of the FOI Act
(information accessible to the applicant by other means).
The HFEA holds information on fertility treatments, patients, partners,
donors and children born as a result of these treatments in the UK on a
secure databased known as ‘The Register’. Due to how the data is recorded
on the Register, it is not possible to provide the total number of embryos
currently in cryopreserved storage in the UK.
We publish data on the number of embryos stored each year in Table 23 of
the underlying dataset of our [1]Fertility Trends 2019 report, which can
be downloaded as an excel file at the top of the report. The number of
embryos stored for use by patient each year can be found in column J. This
does not represent the total number of embryos remaining in storage as
some embryos will be removed from storage for reasons such as use in
treatment or donation. You can find the number of embryos donated each
year in column K and the number of embryos thawed in column G.
Should you be dissatisfied with the handling of your request, in the first
instance, please write to the [2]Director of Finance and Resources at the
HFEA. You also have a further right of appeal to the Information
Commissioner.
Kind regards,
