Email replies by teachers

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for Education,

I have simply one question for you.
Does a Teacher HAVE to reply to a students email in the holiday if they have set homework?
I simply ask this as i am still a student and the school im at doesnt enforce this even though certain instuctions about homework can be inadequate and i like to ask question to ensure correctly completed assignments.

Yours faithfully,

Luke Cheeseman

ACCOUNT, Unmonitored, Department for Education

Dear Mr Cheeseman

Thank you for your email of 16 August about homework.

It may be helpful if I explain that schools are not required by law to set
homework though, as a department, we encourage them to do so.

Many schools do set homework and where that is the case, it is good
practice to develop their own policies on homework, in consultation with
staff, pupils, parents and governors. These should be reviewed on a
regular basis, and available to all staff, parents, and pupils.

Where schools do set homework, the law gives them the legal right to
ensure that pupils complete any tasks 'reasonably assigned to them' in
connection with their education. This means that teachers are empowered by
law to set homework that is reasonable in terms of volume and difficulty
and to impose disciplinary penalties on pupils who fail to do it.

With the above in mind, you may wish to discuss your concerns with the
school in the first place and seek to resolve these.

Thank you once again for writing and I hope that this information is
useful.
