DWP's Handling of Disability Benefit Arrears

Amanda Hart made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Work and Pensions Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

Background: In an article at this url which we shall provide to you separately in pdf format, your department has been accused of being too slow to fix your mistakes [https://www.civilserviceworld.com/profes...

Given the article I would like to make this FOI request:

1. Timelines for Completion:
Please kindly provide recorded information which shows whether the review will be completed or not.

2. Support for Claimants:
Please provide details on the measures implemented to support claimants who have been underpaid as a result of delays in the review process. Are there additional support services or resources in place to assist those who have faced financial hardship due to these delays?

3. Communication with Claimants:
I am interested in understanding any improvements made in communication with claimants during the review process. Have communication channels been enhanced, and has clearer information been provided to claimants about the status of their cases?

4. Changes to Assessment Criteria:
Has the DWP has implemented any changes to the assessment criteria for PIP based on the court judgment?.

5. Resources Allocated:
Please provide information about the resources allocated to the review process. Specifically, I am interested in knowing the number of staff members trained and the budget allocated to address the backlog of cases.

6. Preventing Future Delays:
I would like to request information on the strategies that the DWP has created to prevent similar delays and inadequacies in the future, particularly in the context of addressing legal rulings.

Please note some portions of this request are framed as questions. ICO guidance states "A request in the form of a question is valid under section 8(1)(c), provided it still describes distinguishing characteristics of the information." [https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/foi...

I understand that there is a cost limit associated with FoI requests, and I kindly request that if providing all the requested information would exceed this limit, you prioritise the most relevant and informative details.

I look forward to your timely response to this FoI request. If you require any clarification or additional information to fulfill this request, please do not hesitate to contact me via the email address provided above.

Yours faithfully,

Amanda Hart
