Drop-out rates

The request was refused by Coventry University.

Dear Freedom of Information Officer,

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000. In order to assist you with this request, I am outlining my query as specifically as possible.

1) How many students have permanently dropped out of their courses at any Level (year) of their course in each of the last five years? I would like these figures broken down by the course they were studying. (For example, 14 students dropped out of the Journalism BA (Hons) course in 2008.)

2) If possible, could you also state what percentage the drop out rate was for each course in each of the last five years? (For example, 8% of students studying the Journalism BA (Hons) course dropped out in 2008.)

3) What were the overall drop out rates from the university in each of the last five years? (For example, 14% of students dropped out of university in 2008.)

I would be interested in any information held by your organisation regarding my request. I understand that I do not have to specify particular files or documents and that it is the department’s responsibility to provide the information I require.

If my request is denied in whole or in part, I ask that you justify all deletions by reference to specific exemptions of the act. I will also expect you to release all non-exempt material. I reserve the right to appeal your decision to withhold any information or to charge excessive fees.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing/by email that you have received this request. I look forward to your response within 20 working days, as outlined by the statute.

Regards,

Dan Perry

Dear Mr Perry

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request, received on 24th November 2009.

The University shall respond to your request at the earliest possible opportunity and in any event within the statutory time limit. The University has interpreted your request to apply to the following academic, rather than calendar, years:

2004/2005;
2005/2006;
2006/2007;
2007/2008; and
2008/2009

If the University's interpretation of your request is incorrect and you instead wish for information for the preceding five calendar years then please confirm this, otherwise the University will continue to process your request on the interpretation set out above and respond accordingly. That response will also contain further information regarding the University's appeals procedure, should you determine that such a route is necessary.

Kind regards
