Dr Tommy MacKay’s Unauthorised use of the title Professor

The request was successful.

Dear University of Strathclyde,

Dr MacKay ahs been provided with copies of FOI requests, number 2020/119, 2020/149 and 2020/159. The FOI responses confirmed that Dr MacKay’s Visiting Professor engagement ended in 2016 and that he was never entitled to use the title of Professor.
Dr MacKay has dismissed the FOI responses and has informed a Scottish Health and Educational Tribunal and the Health and Care Professions Council that he can use the title of professor because it is on a Strathclyde University web page: https://www.strath.ac.uk/courses/postgra...

Under the title ‘Guest Lecturers’ there is the statement ‘Visiting lecturers include Professor Tommy MacKay who is a practising Educational Psychologist’.

Please can you confirm the date that this web page was written and posted on the University website.

Further FOI response 2021/097 confirmed that Dr MacKay is not entitled to use the title of Professor. Dr MacKay is still using the title Professor on his website and has not updated his publicly available CV to show that his Visiting Professor agreement ended in 2016.

Please can you confirm if the University of Strathclyde have sent Dr MacKay a ‘Cease and Desist’ notice. If not, what is the process within the University to ensure that honorary lecturers comply with University guidelines regarding the use of titles.

Yours faithfully,

G E Paterson
