Donations Committee
Dear Queen's College, Oxford,
I am writing to request information on how the College considers small donations to local organisations.
These may be the responsibility of a specific committee (not necessarily called Donations Committee) or they may be addressed by a general committee (which may be called General Purposes Committee, Internal Committee, or another name).
If you have a specific committee which considers donations, please provide its most recent minutes.
If you have a general committee which considers donations, please provide the most recent decision on donations from its minutes.
I am also requesting any criteria or guidelines for eligibility and any criteria or guidelines which the College uses in making decisions on requests for donations.
Yours faithfully,
William Crowe
Dear Mr Crowe,
Thank you for your email of 11 April 2024, which has been considered under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The College holds the information cited in your request.
We do not have a Donations Committee or equivalent. Instead we nominate a Fellow of the College who proposes donations on a termly basis.
The College’s starting point is to note that it may only use its funds to advance its charitable purposes. It therefore only gives to other charities when such giving is a better way of advancing those purposes than using the funds directly.
Specific additional criteria which may be considered are:
• Whether the charity contributes to the College’s objectives for research and learning;
• Whether the charity makes a contribution to supporting student wellbeing in ways that complement College, NHS and other provision (eg some forms of counselling such as bereavement, or other specialist welfare support)
• Whether the charity contributes to the College’s long-term sustainability by, for example, helping to demonstrate the College’s support for its local community and environment (eg tackling homelessness)
• The potential scale of impact of a gift, including the extent to which it might create synergies or leverage other support.
Best wishes,
A Timms
