Donations Committee

The request was successful.

Dear All Souls College, Oxford,

I am writing to request information on how the College considers small donations to local organisations.

These may be the responsibility of a specific committee (not necessarily called Donations Committee) or they may be addressed by a general committee (which may be called General Purposes Committee, Internal Committee, or another name).

If you have a specific committee which considers donations, please provide its most recent minutes.

If you have a general committee which considers donations, please provide the most recent decision on donations from its minutes.

I am also requesting any criteria or guidelines for eligibility and any criteria or guidelines which the College uses in making decisions on requests for donations.

Yours faithfully,

William Crowe

Dear Mr Crowe,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. It has been passed to
me as the College’s Freedom of Information focal point.

Outside of grants the College makes to support academic activity elsewhere
in the University, All Souls makes small donations to a wide variety of
charities and organisations. There is no set policy, however the College
favours causes related to education, music, arts, and more broadly if
based in or around Oxford.

Donations are approved by the College’s General Purposes Committee. A
subset of that committee will meet in advance to review each application
and make recommendations to the wider committee.

Below, is the relevant extract of the minutes from the last GPC meeting
held on the 27^th of January.

1.      Appeals

The Committee approved the following appeals:

(i)          To reconfirm the College’s annual £10k donation to Harris
Manchester College. The Committee also agreed to broaden the scope of the
donation to support ‘educational and research purposes’, rather than the
purchase of books only.

(ii)        A £250 donation to Restore [Local], to assist their work to
help people in Oxfordshire in mental health recovery.

(iii)      A £250 donation to Oxford Nightline [Local], to assist their
work in providing confidential listening services to students.

The Committee did not agree a request from Oxford Spires (the Buzz
Explorer Scouts Unit) [Local] for a donation to allow scouts to attend a
summer expedition in Germany.

Kind regards

Steve Evans
