DoHSC funding of PACE trial

The request was successful.

Dear Department of Health and Social Care,

Please could you tell me how much the DoHSC donated to the £5m funding of the PACE trial carried out by Queen Mary University London (http://www.wolfson.qmul.ac.uk/current-pr...), researching treatment for 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome'?

Yours faithfully,
G. Ryan

Dear Department of Health and Social Care,

Thank you for your reply of the 19th March 2018.

I would like some clarification on the figure you gave me, namely the sum of £200,000.

1) Last month, I submitted an FoI request to the Medical Research Council asking for a breakdown of funding into the PACE study regarding ‘Chronic Fatigue Syndrome’, which was to be undertaken by the Queen Mary University London.

The MRC said on 28th March 2018
(https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/m...

“The total funding amount provided by the MRC to QMUL to support the PACE Trial was £2,779,361. This included the contributions from the Department for Work and Pensions (£90k), Department of Health (£134k), National Institute for Health Research (£66k)”

I assume that your quoted figure of £200,000 is derived from the combined contributions from the DoH “(£134k)” and the NIHR “(£66k)”.

Is that correct?

2) Subsequently, I contacted the Queen Mary University London regarding the same funding topic. They repeated the figure given to me by the MRC regarding the its own contribution, presumably including the £200,000 from the DoH and NIHR.

However, they claimed that the Department of Health had contributed what looks like a further “£1,633,020”.

QMUL’s reply on 19th April 2018
(https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/f...

“I am pleased to provide the following response.

1. £2,779,362

2. £1,633,020”

(First figure being the sum provided to QMUL from the MRC)

Could you please confirm or deny that the DoH (now DHSC) provided a further £1,633,020 on top of an original £200,000?

Yours faithfully,

G. Ryan
