Documents related to the decision to stop SciDev.Net funding

We're waiting for Mico Tatalovic to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Department for International Development,

Could you please provide all written documentation, including financial reports, PowerPoint and other presentation materials, memos and e-mail communication – including those DFID staff exchanged with SciDev.Net staff and board of trustees – in the period between 1st June 2016 and 1 August 2016 that mention the decision and reasons for DFID stopping the funding of SciDev.Net.

For the portion of this request that covers emails, please do a keyword search of individuals who would have likely interacted with DFID for documents with the following keywords between those dates:

SciDev
SciDev.net

If you have suggestions for modifying my request, I'm happy to discuss — please just let me know.

Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Mico Tatalovic

Dear Department for International Development,

Thank you for your timely response on this matter.

SciDev.Net is a charity that built up a large audience and network of friends around the world, with an aim of reducing human poverty and suffering through science and technology. A 2016 DFID-commissioned report of SciDev.Net published on your website gave it a glowing review and recommended to continue funding it. This is why it came to a big surprise to many of us – the staff that were made redundant, former staff, freelancers and friends around the globe, when after 15 years of financial support DFID so suddenly pulled out of funding SciDev.Net without even saying why - even as it’s own report said SciDev.Net was great value for money in terms of impact and reach.

I believe it’s in the public interest to know what led to that decision, especially as the matter is shrouded in speculation and mystery, given that the last information you have published on your website is precisely that glowing report following which funding to SciDev.Net was terminated.

Regarding commercial interests, SciDev.Net is a charity, not a for-profit firm. It has already lost all its staff in London and the secretive decision from DFID might do the new management more damage in the long run than being open about it. And DFID is a publically funded body, so I can’t see this information affecting its commercial interests.

Yours faithfully,

Mico Tatalovic
