Dear General Medical Council,

Doctors registered with GMC

Are doctors working for the DVLA still accountable to the GMC for their actions or are they exempt because of their Government position?

Can members of the public complain about a DVLA doctor that is working in the capacity of a doctor for the DVLA if they are GMC registered?

Are the DVLA at liberty to disclose a doctors registration if asked by a member of the public or is it protected by the government agency status.

Yours faithfully,

Robert

Matthew McCoig-Lees (0161 923 6579), General Medical Council

Dear Mr LLwellyn

I write further to previous correspondence with a response under the
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000.

I have responded to your questions below:

Are doctors working for the DVLA still accountable to the GMC for their
actions or are they exempt because of their Government position?

The GMC is the regulator for registered doctors who work for the DVLA.

Can members of the public complain about a DVLA doctor that is working in
the capacity of a doctor for the DVLA if they are GMC registered

Yes.

Are the DVLA at liberty to disclose a doctors registration if asked by a
member of the public or is it protected by the government agency status

If you are asking ‘can the DVLA confirm if a particular doctor working for
them is registered with the GMC’ then there is no GMC rule that says they
cannot. There may be other applicable laws which they have to abide by
which effects what they can confirm, but how they might apply to the DVLA
is not within our remit and so we hold no information in relation to that.

Kind Regards

Matt
