DLR Engineering Fleet

The request was successful.

Dear Docklands Light Railway Limited,

I request further information regarding the DLR engineering fleet (locomotives 993 and 994).

1. Are these locomotives capable of running outside of possessions and engineering hours?

2. Do they have signalling equipment installed for the DLR?

3. How frequently is each one out on the network? (in the last 6 months)

4. Follow up to 3, can I have a copy of the plan for any forthcoming works in 2021, and as far into 2022 as possible, for their use outside of Poplar Depot? i.e. on which dates, and which locations will they be used at in the forthcoming months?

5. In the previous 6 months, has either locomotive been outstabled at Beckton Depot?

Yours faithfully,

F Hay

Dear F Hay

TfL Ref: 1137 - 2122

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 31
August 2021 asking for information about the DLR Engineering Fleet.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can
confirm that we hold some of the information you require.  You asked: I
request further information regarding the DLR engineering fleet
(locomotives 993 and 994).

1. Are these locomotives capable of running outside of possessions and
engineering hours? No, they always work in isolated possessions, never in
automatic traffic hours. Locomotive 993 is a Battery Locomotive. 994 is a
GEC Locomotive.

2. Do they have signalling equipment installed for the DLR? No, they are
driven ‘on sight’. They do activate axle counters though.

3. How frequently is each one out on the network? (in the last 6 months).
This depends on what our maintenance and renewals activities are at the
time and the demand for engineer’s trains. Currently the 993 is used about
twice a week. 994 is currently out of action, and is awaiting a repair. As
both locos have similar uses it’s one or the other, they are rarely both
used on the same shift. 993 has more flexibility as it can be used in
tunnels.

4. Follow up to 3, can I have a copy of the plan for any forthcoming works
in 2021, and as far into 2022 as possible, for their use outside of Poplar
Depot? i.e. on which dates, and which locations will they be used at in
the forthcoming months? We don’t plan our engineer’s vehicles that far in
advance. Currently they are only planned a week in advance and that
changes. Nearly all of the time they are worked out of, and return to,
Poplar depot each night they are used.

5. In the previous 6 months, has either locomotive been outstabled at
Beckton Depot? Yes, but Poplar Depot is their main base.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
