Dear Mr. Ap Dafydd,
I refer to your Freedom of Information Act Request acknowledged by ourselves on
17th September 2019. Your request sought information relating to District Nursing
with Swansea Bay Health Board.
1. Who are district nurses answerable to - the Health Board or the GP?
District Nurses are employed by the Health Board and therefore answerable to the Health
Board.
2. How many district nurses are currently on rota within your health board area
- both FT and PT?
There are currently 188 district/community nursing staff in post.
3. What is the chain of command with regard to district nurses working in GP
clusters?
The District Nursing service working within the Clusters is managed in the following
hierarchy:-
Community nursing staff are managed by District Nurses with a Specialist
Qualification.
The District Nurses with a specialist qualification are managed by team leads with
a Specialist Qualification.
District Nurses with a Specialist Qualification are managed by Lead Nurses who
report to two Heads of Nursing.
Two Heads of Nursing report directly to the Unit Nurse Director in the Primary Care
and Community Service Delivery Unit.

4. What procedures do district nurses have to follow when responding to
emergency care in their area?
District Nursing Services are not configured to provide emergency care. They do have a
4 hour response for patients who are deemed in need of more urgent support.
5. Can individual GPs and surgeries ask for district nurses to attend emergency
care?
GPs and other stakeholders can contact the relevant Single Point of Contact centres and
refer patients for District Nursing support. If appropriate and deemed necessary at the
point of triage an urgent response (within 4 hours) can be initiated for a District Nursing
visit.
