Dear Highways Agency,
Will you please tell me the difference between white speed camera signs, and blue ones (which always stipulate the speed limit on the sign, whilst the former do not). Is there a legal requirement, prior to any active speed camera, to display a blue one? An explanation between the functions of the two would be greatly appreciated

Dear Mr Green
Thank you for your email which has been forwarded to this mailbox. I can
confirm that I am able to reply without reference to the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 as the signs that you have referred to are contained
in Regulations that are in the public domain.
Speed camera signs are prescribed in diagrams 878, 879, 880 and 880.1 in
the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 and as amended
in 2008, which can be viewed on the internet at –
The caption below each sign diagram describes the meaning and we have
included this information in our booklet “Know Your Traffic Signs” which
is at –
, please refer to page 21.
These signs are informatory and may be placed in advance of a camera;
there is no legal requirement that they should be used. We have published
advice on their use in Chapter 3 of the Traffic Signs Manual which is on
the Department’s website at –
