Dear Mr Sheppard,
Unfortunately, we don’t have much to help you. It’s not an area of work
we’ve looked at recently.
1. What is the latest research your agency has conducted on the impact
to the environment on the usage of disposable nappies, including
estimations on the number used each year in the UK;
We haven’t done any further research since the publication of the report
in 2008 – see Q5 below.
2. The percentage of landfill nappies equate to in the UK;
This data isn’t collected. The way the coding of wastes is set up doesn’t
require a specific code for nappies. Nappies will be discarded in normal
household bins as mixed municipal waste. Not all of this goes to
landfills. Separately collected nappies (for example, from a public
toilet) are described in the same way as other hygiene wastes, so the data
would not distinguish quantities of nappies.
3. How much single use plastic is used in the use of disposable
nappies in the UK,
The nappy manufacturing industry may have this information.
4. If any fiscal measures are being looked at to encourage people to
find alternatives.
We’re not aware of any. Fiscal policy is not an Environment Agency
responsibility. There is a range of government policy/strategy work
looking at resource efficiency and reducing waste (for example, the [1]25
Year Environment Plan), but nothing specifically related to nappies.
5. Has any worked been conducted on this issue since the following
report was published a decade ago:-
[2]http://www.nappyinformationservice.co.uk...
No – see question 1. The report is a record of the LCA work undertaken at
that time and the assumptions, data and methodology are stated in the
report. We are happy for others to undertake work that uses assumptions
and approaches that reflect any changes that have occurred since we
conducted our study.
I’ve not responded formally as a request for information under the
Environmental Information Regulations to enable me to make a quick
response to you, and also because of the nature of your questions and the
fact we don’t have the information (although this is of course an
exception under EIR Regulation 12(4)(a)). However, I have included our
standard response for non-disclosure in case you are not satisfied with
the response above.
If you are not satisfied you can contact us within 2 calendar months to
ask for our decision to be reviewed. We shall review our response to your
request and give you our decision in writing within 40 working days. If
you are still not satisfied following this, you can raise a concern with
the Information Commissioner, who is the statutory regulator for Freedom
of Information and the Environmental Information Regulations. The contact
details are: Information Commissioner’s Office: Wycliffe House, Water
Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, Tel: 0303 123 1113, Website:
