Dear Mark Jenkins
Request for information
We write further to your request for information dated 17 July 2023, which
we have been considering under
the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.
Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO’s) are operating by design and form a vital
part of our sewer network, during periods of intense rainfall they operate
to prevent homes and business being flooded. In Wales, we have a programme
of tackling some of the CSOs with the biggest impact to reduce the
frequency of overflow operation. We are investing significantly to improve
storm overflows with £140m being invested between 2020-2025 with a further
£420m planned from 2025 to 2030.
CSO’s are highly regulated by Natural Resource Wales (NRW) and the
Environmental Agency (EA) and for the avoidance of doubt, please be
assured that we take our responsibility for protecting the environment
very seriously and are always sorry for any adverse impact we may
inadvertently cause.
Turning to your request for the discharges into the Gwendraeth Fach River
from the Pontfaen outfall in Porthyrhyd in 2020,2021, and 2022, please
find attached the data we hold.
We hope that this response is clear. Should you have any questions, please
contact us on email [1][email address]
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within 40 working days of the date of receipt of this response
and should be addressed to Company Secretary, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water Linea,
Fortran Road, St. Mellons, Cardiff, Wales, CF3 0LT.
If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have
the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision.
Yours faithfully
