Dear Mr Ivers
I write further to your request for information submitted via the
Whatdotheyknow website:
Dear United Utilities Water PLC,
Could you please list the recorded incidents of untreated sewage being
discharged from your sewers into Middleton (Nr Manchester) waterways
during the last 5 years.
Please find the requested information attached.
However kindly note that Spill data is routinely submitted to the
Environment Agency as part of our permit obligations where we have
monitoring equipment. The totals are based on the Environment Agency
permit definition of a spill. In some cases, spill numbers may appear
high due to erroneous readings, so the readings should be read within that
context.
We hope that this now meets with your request. However, should you
consider that we have not adequately complied with our obligations under
Environmental Information Regulations 2004, the law under which we are
providing this to you, you have the right to ask us to carry out an
internal review. This can be done by writing to David Hannon Head of
Legal, United Utilities, Legal Department, Grasmere House First Floor,
Lingley Mere Business Park, Lingley Green Avenue, Great Sankey,
Warrington, WA5 3LP. Alternatively, you may find it easier to e-mail us
directly on [1][United Utilities request email] and your review request will be
forwarded on to Mr Hannon.
Your request for review should explain why you wish a review to be carried
out, and should be made within 40 working days of receipt of this letter,
and we will reply within 40 working days of receipt. If you are not
satisfied with the result of the review, you then have the right to make a
formal complaint to the Information Commissioner.
Finally, I would be grateful if you would kindly acknowledge receipt of
this e-mail.
Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Ivers
I write further to my earlier e-mail today included below.
Kindly note that as an additional point to make that I also wanted to make
you aware that spills from our assets occur as standard operational
practice as relief for the sewer network in times of excess flows and high
rainfall, and in the vast majority of the times, these are specifically
permitted by the Environment Agency
I hope that further clarifies our earlier response

Dear Jain, Rajat,
Thank you for the information you have provided. I note that the data only goes back to September 2016 but I requested 5 years data. Were there no discharges prior to this date or do you not have the information available?
Yours sincerely,
Cliff Ivers
