Dear Freedom of Information Requests,
thank you for your answer.

having data on the number of donor who have mental health issues is NOT required for you to share the accomodation that your service offers/should offer (according to your internal rlevant policy) or on the process that donnors need to follow if they have an accomodation need.
so please answer question 10 or provide relevant policies around reasonable adjustment for donors.

Yours sincerely,
Ms Vanpeene

Freedom of Information Requests, NHS Blood and Transplant

Dear Ms. Vanpeene,

Please find some additional information below. To be clear, NHSBT is a blood and transplant service, and NHSBT do not provide an accommodation service for donors.

10. what reasonable adjustment, accommodation or support is provided for donors with?

- mental illness (specify per illness if relevant) – Mental Health or mental health illness does not exclude donors from donating blood. Each donor undergoes a donation safety check at each donation session and a full assessment is made at each visit. The questionnaire does ask about medication and visits to Health care professionals but does not ask specifically about mental health. There may be medications that impacts on a donors ability to donate and these will be explored and the donor will be asked appropriate questions to ensure that they are feeling fit and well on the day. We must be confident that the donor has given informed consent and has the capacity to give consent. Capacity to give consent is, again, not a specific question, but assessed throughout the health screening process by the staff with skilled interviewing techniques and confirming understanding.

- post traumatic stress – the response to this question is very similar to the one above and can only be assessed by on the day health screening and confirming that the donor is feeling fit and well on the day. As PTSD can present in many different ways and the impact on individuals so varied it is not possible to give a generic response that would include all donors who may be affected by PTSD.

and what steps (if any) do donor need to take to obtain such support/accommodations – the help line can give advice to donors on pre donation preparation and also give advice to donors to check if they are able to donate. More specific clinical questions can be directed to a member of the clinical team but again the “on the day” health screening will determine the donors suitability to donate.

If you are dissatisfied with our response, you have a right to request an internal review.

Kind Regards,
