Dear Forestry Commission,

I would like to know if you have details of the current planned sell of of woodlands and forests that are under your direct control. This has been highlighted by the details by Jim Paice's frank evidence to a recent House of Lords select committee -

" Part of our policy is clearly established: we wish to proceed with very substantial disposal of public forest estate, which could go to the extent of all of it…

"

Yours faithfully,

Edwards, Rachael, Forestry Commission

Dear Graham Holden,

Thank you for your request for information about the current planned
sales of Forestry Commission woodland.

On 2 December Minister of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs,
Jim Paice, answered a Parliamentary Question that confirmed the Forestry
Commission would sell approximately 40,000 hectares, approximately 15%,
of the public forest estate over the spending review period. The link
to the question and answer is provided below.

We are still working to identify the sites that will make up this 40,000
hectares, using detailed criteria that are currently being reviewed by
Ministers.

Jim Paice also announced that there will be a public consultation
launched in January, which will assess different ownership and
management models for the remaining public forest estate. This
consultation will invite comments from all interested parties and will
provide more information about the estate and options for the future.
We will need to await the outcome of the consultation before having more
details about the extent of sales after the spending review period.

I hope you have found the above information helpful.

Regards,

Rachael Edwards

Dear Edwards, Rachael,

Thank you for your incredibly quick reply.

Are you aware of the comment that Jim Paice made with regards to the sell of - of ALL the Forestry Commission Estate.

http://www.parliament.uk/documents/lords...

"Yes, indeed. Part of our policy is clearly established: we wish to proceed
with, to correctly use your word, very substantial disposal of public forest estate, which
could go to the extent of all of it.
"

the use of the words "substantial disposal of public forest estate", and "to the extend of all of it" - seems to indicate a great deal more than 15%.

But I understand that the above is no longer a FOI, and that you have answered my FOI request.

Yours sincerely,

In the answer to Q6 of this session in the house of lords, Jim Paice explains that the government believes it can sell 15% of the forest estate without changing the law.

http://www.parliament.uk/documents/lords...

To go any further would require a change of law, hence clauses 17 to 19 of the public bodies bill, currently (16/01/2011) being debated in the House of Lords:

This explains why all the figures provided to-date only cover the 15%. Hope this helps!
