Details of meetings with women's groups on hate crime bill

The request was successful.

Dear Scottish Government,

Giving evidence to the Scottish Parliament's Justice Committee on the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill on 27 October 2020, Cabinet Secretary for Justice Humza Yousaf MSP said that he had met with "women's groups working at the coalface" to discuss adding 'sex' as a protected characteristic to the draft legislation.

Please can you list which groups the Minister and Scottish Government officials have met with and please provide all notes, minutes and correspondence related to these meetings.

Yours faithfully,

L Mackenzie

Dear Scottish Government,

Thank you for your response.

Please note that my request related specifically to the women's groups the Cabinet Secretary for Justice described as "working at the coalface" during his oral evidence to the Justice Committee on 27 October.

"There is a range of reasons—and, as I said,
there is a whole report on those—why a number of
national organisations do not want a sex or gender
aggravator to be introduced. I decided to meet
some organisations that represent and work with
women at the coalface at a local level. Again, we
can provide details of those organisations. We met
on a couple of occasions, and it is fair to say that
the views of a number of them—not all of them—
align with the view of Engender and those other
organisations."
