Dear Mr Poplitio
I write further to previous correspondance with a response under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.
We are unable to provide total figurers for how much money was spent on
this matter. One of the principle reasons for this is that neither MPTS
nor GMC staff log the amount of time they spend on individual cases in the
way solicitors would do and this accounts for a significant proportion of
spending on cases.
However, I can disclose that the GMC’s legal fees were £8880, including
VAT. The levels of external counsel’s fees incurred by the GMC are in line
with those incurred by other parties, eg. medical defence organisations
acting on behalf of doctors in such proceedings. The use by the GMC of its
in-house legal team to conduct such proceedings ensures that external
legal fees incurred in the conduct of these proceedings is minimised.
We are unable to provide specific figures for the cost of the MPT hearing.
However, based on an estimated average cost per day based on the 2022
budget, we estimate that the hearing cost £22,104 for eight days. This
includes tribunal member fees and expenses, transcription costs and
catering as well as MPTS operations staffing and administrative expenses.
We have also allocated £8,304 in fixed costs to the hearing. If the GMC
holds more hearing days, the amount of fixed costs per hearing would
decrease.
I hope the information I have been able to provide is helpful.
Your right to appeal
If you wish to appeal my response please email [1][GMC request email], setting
out your reasons to the Information Access Manager. We will only consider
appeals received within 40 working days of our response. You can also
appeal to the Information Commissioner, the regulator of the FOIA and DPA.
We can provide more details on this if you need them. They may ask you to
go through the GMC’s review mechanism before they will consider the
matter.

Kind Regards
Matt
