SarahHartley made this Freedom of Information request to The Victoria and Albert Museum

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear The Victoria and Albert Museum,
Please treat the following questions as a Freedom of Information request.
I would like any response to be made electronically and wherever possible in spreadsheet form.

This request aims to establish a detailed understanding of who the V&A South Kensington Learning Department programmes impacts, specifically what is described by the V&A as “instances of engagement”.

To explain further - in the V&A Annual Report and Accounts 2017-2018 point 1. Under the heading, “Create a world-class learning and visitor experience across all V&A sites and collections” there is a statement which reads as follows: “there were over 330,000 instances of engagement.”

In reference to this statement I would like to know:
1. What methodology was used for classifying the ‘330,000 instances of engagement’?
2. What are the different activities described as instances of engagement? Please provide a full list.
3. Please could I have breakdown of each type of “engagement” activity (as above) with the corresponding number of instances for each of those activities.
4. Please could I have a breakdown showing the location of each of those engagement activities I.e. the local authority area in which the activity took place.
5. Please also share any demographic data which is captured in respect of the instances of engagement eg. Gender, age, ethnicity, socio-economic.
6. How many instances of engagement involved participants over the age of 18 years old.

In addition to these details relating to 2017-2018, I would be grateful of the overall figures and the same breakdown for the latest figures on instances of engagement for 2018-2019.

If you are only able to release some of the information I would ask that you release this data rather than withhold the entire set. If you would like more clarification on this issue do not hesitate to contact me using this site - as I would expect to be contacted should you need any clarification.

Please can you confirm that you have received this request and I'd like to respectfully remind you that under the freedom of information act 2000 you are bound to respond in 20 days.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah Hartley

Dear Sarah Hartley,

Thank you for your enquiry. Taking your questions in order:

 1. What methodology was used for classifying the ‘330,000 instances of
engagement’?

According to the 2017-18 Annual Report there were “over 330,000 instances
of engagement with V&A South Kensington Learning department programmes”.

We define ‘instances of engagement’ as the recorded number of attendees
and interactions at each learning activity, and visitors to learning
displays.

Annual instances of engagement are based on actual counts collected via
manual and electronic devices. Numbers of self-guided visits are collected
via the museum’s booking system.

The 2017-18 total mentioned in the above statement did not include figures
for self-guided visits, guided tours and festivals.

 2. What are the different activities described as instances of
engagement? Please provide a full list.

The V&A Learning team offer a full range of programmes, including courses
of various durations, workshops, conferences, seminars, study days, talks,
lectures, demonstrations, guided tours, festivals, special events and
self-guided resources. Instances of engagement are recorded by audience,
rather than by activity type.

the instances of engagement e.g. gender, age, ethnicity,

figures on instances of engagement for 2018-2019.

Please see above table for detail on both 2017-18 and 2018-19 figures.

According to the 2018-19 Annual Report there were “327,143 instances of
engagement with V&A South Kensington Learning department programmes”. The
2018-19 total included figures for self-guided visits, guided tours and
festivals.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. In accordance with
the Freedom of Information Act, the V&A does operate a complaints
procedure and if you are dissatisfied with our response to your request
you may make a complaint, in the first instance to myself as the V&A's

satisfaction you also have the right to refer the matter to the
Information Commissioner.

Yours sincerely,
