Destination stats for EU domiciled University students studying in Scotland

K Stuart made this Freedom of Information request to Higher Education Statistics Agency

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Higher Education Statistics Agency,

I hope you can help with my request. I am looking for statistics that tell me how many EU domiciles who studied at Scottish Universities stayed in Scotland to work after graduation. I would also like to know how many of the above stayed to work in Scotland after completing their medical degree. I would appreciate it if I could have this broken down from years 2009 - 2016.

Yours faithfully,

K Stuart

Josh Chaplin, Higher Education Statistics Agency

Dear Stuart

Apologize for the late response. This is certainly something we can help you with. In our department we do offer bespoke data requests for free if they fall around 16 data points which this one may. Unfortunately in terms of offering 2009-2016 we can only offer up to the 2014/15 academic year as this is our most up to data group.

The data for the location of the employment of leavers would come from our destination of leavers survey, this is a survey which is sent out to students 6 months after they graduate and has around an 80% response rate. I would also just like to make you aware that in 2011/12 there was an overhaul of the survey meaning that the phrasing of some questions changed and the way the questions are answered also changed. This will have little effect on the particular data you are looking for but it's just something to keep in mind when making comparisons with pre and post 2011/12 years.

In terms of your specified subject (Medicine) would you want us to use our subject area field which is Medicine and dentistry or would you want us to use a more specific field which just isolates Medicine students?

In terms of exactly what you are looking for I would suggest,

Item 1 -the number of EU domiciled leavers who studied at a Scottish HE provider and were in employment in Scotland 2009/10-2014/15 by subject marker (Medicine/other)

So you are aware of HESA's freedom of information, here is a link to its information on our website https://www.hesa.ac.uk/freedom-of-inform...

Dear Josh Chaplin,

Thank you for your reply and welcome your suggestion in ' Item 1', could you take out dentistry and give me medicine only please. Could I add to this FOI and ask for the total amount it costs to provide free education to EU domiciles?

Many thanks

K Stuart

Josh Chaplin, Higher Education Statistics Agency

Dear Stuart

As you would like medicine alone it would mean you are no longer selecting a subject area but a principal subject of study, here is a link to all of our classified principal subjects https://www.hesa.ac.uk/component/content... if you choose which one/ones would be most relevant we can make sure we are collecting the data for exactly what you are looking for. The medicine based subjects are all within the first page.

In terms of looking for the costs to provide free education to EU domiciles, we do not have this exact information. We may have similar information that may be useful to you. If you could let me know further details about what you are trying to achieve from this data that might help us to identity what extra data may be useful to you. We have information about the fee eligibility of students which is described in the following link
https://www.hesa.ac.uk/Manuals/14051/a/F.... In addition to this our finance record details sources of income including the income from tuitions fees and education contracts here is a link to the definitions of our finance data https://www.hesa.ac.uk/index.php?option=....

Are either of these data sources of interest to you, let me know if you have any other questions

Hi Stuart apologize for the late reply I've been on annual leave for the last week. To confirm the specification that you are looking for:

Item 1- the number of EU domiciled leavers who studied at a Scottish HE provider and were in employment in Scotland 2009/10-2014/15 by subject marker ((A1) Pre-clinical medicine and
(A3) Clinical medicine).

Is there any other filters that you would like us to add to the dataset for example separating it by level of study (Undergraduate/postgraduate) or by mode of study (full time/part time) or would you want us to include all students in our dataset

Hi Josh,

Just to recap what I'm looking for

1) Total number of EU domiciled HE leavers working in Scotland broken down by year
2) Item 1 - broken down by year

No other filters required

many thanks for your help,

K Stuart

Josh Chaplin, Higher Education Statistics Agency

Just to confirm when you specify the total number of EU domiciled HE
leavers working in Scotland,  you are referring to graduates of HE
providers in Scotland not just graduates who studied across the whole of
the UK.

Apologize for the delay- just making sure that we provide you with exactly
what you are looking for,  here is a mock table of what the data would
look like roughly for one of the years.

Is this what you would be interested in?

Hi Josh

I'm afraid I cannot give you contact details you ask over a public forum (for obvious reasons) I did try and call you but your phone is being diverted onto a message saying you are out of the office. Will try again later

Yours sincerely,

K Stuart

Josh Chaplin, Higher Education Statistics Agency

Unfortunately my phone line is offline at the moment so I cannot take calls, I have spoken to a supervisor and as this is just a free data request I can provide the data with just your full name and email address for contact information if that is preferable?

Regards

Josh
