Dear University of Sheffield,
I am writing to kindly request the following information regarding admissions to Undergraduate Dentistry (A200) in the following years; 2018, 2019 and 2020 and 2021 (if available).
For each of the years can you clarify the number of applicants, number of applicants called for interview, the number of offers made
Can you clarify how many places were available in each of the requested years
Can you clarify how each of the elements of the selection process are weighted to arrive at an offer of an interview
GCSE results
Predicted grades
UCAT score
personal statement
The lowest or threshold UCAT score for undergraduate applicants to Dentistry A200 at the University of Sheffield, who were subsequently invited to interview for each of the requested years.
Did you consider situational judgement score?
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, how many students of the 2021 intake were deferred to 2022.
Is there any reduction in numbers for 2022 intake for new applicants
Yours faithfully,
Michael Stafford
Dear Michael
Thank you for your request for information from the University of
Sheffield.
The University does not supply data on the current admissions cycle by
virtue of Section 43(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Section
43(2) exempts information from disclosure which would or would be likely
to prejudice the commercial interests of any person. While we recognise a
public interest in the transparency of University operations, it is felt
that disclosing the information at the present time provides an insight
into the admissions process and recruitment strategy that would be likely
to impact the University’s ability to compete effectively in the higher
education market. We would be happy to consider releasing the information
once the recruitment cycle has fully concluded, in December 2021.
As such, the information requested has been provided for all years
specified except the 2021 academic year.
For each of the years can you clarify the number of applicants, number of
applicants called for interview, the number of offers made 2018, 2019 and
2020 and 2021
This information is available via the following link:

Please see the ‘Admissions Data’ section near the bottom of the page.
For this reason, the information is exempt under section 21 of the FOIA,
as it is reasonably accessible to you.
Can you clarify how many places were available in each of the requested
years
71 places each year
Can you clarify how each of the elements of the selection process are
weighted to arrive at an offer of an interview

UCAT score
personal statement
Applicants who apply for the course typically have the minimum GCSE
requirements of 6 grade 7’s and either have or are predicted A grades in
their A-level examinations or equivalent academic qualifications. As a
result of having such high calibre applicants, we try to adopt a holistic
approach when assessing an application, taking into account academic and
non-academic qualities in order to assess an applicant’s potential to
study at Higher Education and become a healthcare professional. The
consideration of applications includes assessment of any Career
Exploration demonstrated in your personal statement and academic
reference. Similarly, the Personal Qualities and Values of healthcare
professionals, recognised, observed, discussed and demonstrated in your
submission. The assessors rank on a 4 point scale from unacceptable to
excellent.
The lowest or threshold UCAT score for undergraduate applicants to
Dentistry A200 at the University of Sheffield, who were subsequently
invited to interview for each of the requested years.
Did you consider situational judgement score?
Please see the link given at Q1 for UCAT scores. We do consider the SJT
part of the UCAT test and we only consider Bands 1-3 we do not consider
Band 4
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, how many students of the 2021 intake
were deferred to 2022.
The University does not provide data regarding the current admissions
cycle, as outlined above.
Is there any reduction in numbers for 2022 intake for new applicants
No, still 71 places available
If you are not satisfied with the University's response to your FOI
request, please see details of our internal review process [2]here, as
well as details on how to contact the Information Commissioner's Office
for an independent review.
Best wishes
Elspeth
