Bob Stanley, The Law Society

Dear Mary Glister

Freedom of Information Request – Our Ref: FOI/077

Further to my email of 17 February 2022 please find below the response to
your request under the Law Society’s Freedom of Information Code of
Practice.

You have requested the following information:

‘Please provide the definitions for the following and where they can be
found on the Law Society website.

1. Non-Litigation - Other
2. Litigation - Other
3. Litigation General
4. Advocacy’

The phrases ‘Litigation General’ and ‘Advocacy’ appear as two of the Areas
of Practice categories on the Find A Solicitor section of our website.
These categories can be used to filter the results of searches on Find A
Solicitor by firm or by individual. We do not define these terms on Find A
Solicitor, but they are based on Areas of Law submitted by solicitors to
the SRA, and can be amended on Find a Solicitor by firms and solicitors
themselves. ‘Non-litigation – other’ and ‘Litigation – other’ do not
appear as Areas of Practice on Find A Solicitor but we are aware that they
appear as two of the Areas of Law on the SRA’s public register of firms.

Other than the above uses of these terms on Find A Solicitor, the general
terms ‘litigation’ and ‘advocacy’ relate to common elements of a
solicitor’s practice, and there will be many places on our wider website
where these words appear, in various combinations. These include, for
example, in guidance notes, consultation responses and descriptions of
publications and events. It would be disproportionate, in terms of cost
and staff time under our Freedom of Information Code, to try and identify
every area on our website where these terms appear. As such, I have
limited this response to the use of these specific terms on the Find A
Solicitor section of our site.

I hope this information is of use. If you are dissatisfied with this
response, paragraphs 23 to 25 of the Code set out some information on the
options available to you.

Yours sincerely
