Decision to use "transgender identity" in TV advertising on the Equality Act

max wallis made this Freedom of Information request to Government Equalities Office

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

Government Equalities Office did not have the information requested.

Dear Government Equalities Office,
I was disturbed at your TV advert warning the public of a criminal offence against groups they listed from the Equality Act, in that it named "transgender identity" and left out "gender reassignment".

I'm aware that the latest BEIS guidance makes it clear that "gender reassignment" applies to "transsexual" persons, not to self-declared trans persons.

Please supply documents on the decision to change to "transgender identity" in this advertising and any guidance or proposed guidance to cover the term. If the use of the term was a mistake, please document how the mistake came about.

Yours faithfully,

max wallis

Dear Government Equalities Office,
You have failed to acknowledge my information request.
I do not consider the Dept International Development is the appropriate part of government to give an answer.

Yours faithfully,

max wallis

Dear Mr Wallis,

In April 2018 the Secretary of State for International Development, Penny Mordaunt, was appointed Minister for Women and Equalities in addition to her existing portfolio. As the Government Equalities Office (GEO) is a Director-led unit, rather than an independent government department, initial receipt and management of FOIs is carried out by the Department for International Development (DFID) on behalf of GEO. DFID then direct FOIs to the relevant GEO officials in order to develop a response.

I can confirm your FOI request (GEOF2018-429) was passed on to the GEO on the 5th of November 2018 and is currently being processed.

Yours Sincerely

Scott McInnes

They suggest the TV advertising campaign is by the Home Office so I shall ask them the same question.
