Deaths for any reason within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccination

Office for National Statistics did not have the information requested.

Dear Office for National Statistics,

After previously requesting this information from Public Health England they confirmed they do not hold the information and suggested your department could provide it. My request is as follows:-

Please provide total number of deaths for any reason within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccination in England. If possible, please show this information for hospital, care home and at home deaths. I do not require numbers of deaths linked to the vaccine or any other cause, I simply require total numbers of those who are now deceased within 28 days of vaccination. This should cover the period 8th December 2020 to 20 April 2021.

To assist you, Public Health Scotland provided figures for a similar request quoted below:-
"Dear Mr xxxxxxx
Freedom of Information Reference: 2021-000426
Thank you for your information request of 20th February 2021.
'Could you please provide the total number of deaths for any reason within 28
days of having a covid vaccine from the start of the vaccination roll out to date.'
I confirm that Public Health Scotland holds the information you have requested and that
this can be provided to you.
Using the latest mortality data available (up to 26th February), 2,207 people have died
within 28 days of vaccination (number of days between vaccine and death is 0-27 where
0 is the day of vaccination). Please note that these deaths are due to any cause.
PHS is not currently aware of any deaths in Scotland that are considered conclusively
linked to vaccination."
Thank you

Tricia McGuigan

Dear Office for National Statistics,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Office for National Statistics's handling of my FOI request 'Deaths for any reason within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccination'.

I am unhappy that a vague response was given to my request, referring me to your website for statistics on the economy and society. I have already checked your website for the specific information and it is not available there, which is why I made the FOI request in the first place.

The statistics I have requested are readily available at Public Health Scotland and as your organisation is 'UK's largest independent producer of official statistics and its recognised National statistical institute', it is reasonable to assume you would a/consider the information of critical National importance. b/ have it readily available. MHRA and PHE have both been asked for the statistics and both have stated they do not possess the information.

I hereby ask that you obtain the figures requested or explain in further detail the reasons they have not been compiled.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/d...

Yours faithfully,

Tricia McGuigan

FOI Team, Office for National Statistics
