Dear Mr Bowen,

I refer to your email dated 16 August 2016 in which you requested information about CRB/DBS checks.

Your request has been dealt with under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Freedom of Information Act 2000

The Freedom of Information Act creates rights of access for any person making a request for information to a public authority. The rights of access are twofold. First, to be informed by the public authority if it holds information of the description specified in the request, and if that is the case, secondly, to be provided with that information. These rights are subject to important limitations, which are designed to achieve a proper balance between the right to know and considerations of law and policy in the broader public interest.

You had asked for the following:

“Please give me the following information related to your service:

The number of positions requiring DBS checks.
The number of employees having had DBS checks.
How many checks are carried per annum?
The costs incurred carrying out these checks”.

In response I can advise that the PPS requires all staff to have DBS Checks. The level of vetting depends on the information to which the position has access.

Currently the PPS has 507 employees including agency staff. All of these staff either have or are undergoing DBS checks.

The number of checks carried out per annum varies according to the clearance status of staff and the number of agency staff recruited. The number and cost of DBS checks carried out for PPS staff in the last three financial years was as follows:

Year Number Cost
2013-2014 68 £5949
2014-2015 39 £7408
2015-2016 17 £2441
