Data surrounding the claim of 6.5m lives saved from Astra Zenica

House of Commons did not have the information requested.

Dear House of Commons,

Recently in the House of Commons ( I believe 8th May)the Right Honourable Penny Mordaunt MP & Leader of the House of Commons replied to Questions put to her by the Right Honourable Andrew Bridgen MP.

In her reply to him, she stated that 6.5 million lives had been saved by the Astra Zenica covid vaccines.
I request the data surrounding these claims. Who made the claims and how they came to their conclusion on which the government has been relying.

I also request the same information in reference to the moderna & pfizer covid vaccines. As similar claims have been made in the House of Commons that these also saved millions of lives. Who made the claims & how did they come to these conclusions? Their workings out please. As obviously the government would not have just taken peoples words for claims?Ministers would have wanted to see the clear & strong evidence before repeatedly putting it out to the Nation?

Regards,

Mr Gavin Roberts.

Dear Gavin Roberts,

Freedom of Information Request F24-266

Thank you for your request for information as copied below. You asked the
House of Commons two questions regarding a reply by the Leader of the
House of Commons Penny Mordaunt MP to a question in the Chamber about the
Astra Zeneca Covid vaccine.

 1. The data surrounding these claims. Who made the claims and how they
came to their conclusion on which the government has been relying.

and

 2. [The] same information in reference to the moderna & pfizer covid
vaccine…as similar claims have been made in the House of Commons that
these also saved millions of lives. Who made the claims & how did they
come to these conclusions?

This information is not held by the House of Commons.

Please understand that Members of Parliament are not employees of the
House of Commons and are responsible for their own work.  Members who
refer to facts and statistics in course of parliamentary proceedings
(including speeches or answers to parliamentary questions) may get this
information from a wide variety of sources. Members may employ staff to
research policy, write speeches and provide background information for a
Member’s work. Ministers often rely on research and policy work undertaken
by dedicated ministerial staff in relevant Government Departments. None of
that information is held by the House of Commons.

You may therefore wish to ask Penny Mordaunt directly for the information
you seek; Members’ contact details can be found on our webpages at:
[1]https://members.parliament.uk/members/co... However, as Members of
Parliament are not public authorities for the purposes of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000, they are not obliged to respond to requests made
under the Act.

Additionally, if a Member has referred to data of this nature while they
were a Minister, they may have acquired it from research carried out by a
government department. In relation to Covid vaccines, this may be research
by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).  If you wish to access
information they hold you should contact them directly, and contact
details can be found on the Government’s webpages at:
[2]https://www.gov.uk/government/organisati....

Lastly, the House of Commons Library researches topical issues and
subjects of interest from publicly available sources, and publishes that
in Briefing Papers for the purpose of informing Members on the matters of
the day. These Papers are available in a searchable database on the
parliamentary website here:
[3]https://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/... note that we do not
know if any of the Commons’ Library Research Briefings were used in Penny
Mordaunt’s speech.

You may, if dissatisfied with the handling of your request, complain to
the House of Commons. Alternatively, if you are dissatisfied with the
outcome of your request you may ask the House of Commons to conduct an
internal review of any decision regarding your request.  Complaints or
requests for internal review should be addressed to: Information
Compliance Team, Governance Office, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA
or [4][House of Commons request email].  Please ensure that you specify the full
reasons for your complaint or internal review along with any arguments or
points that you wish to make.
