My request is as follows for the last five years (Academic Year 2014 – 2018)

1. Entry requirements for your Undergraduate Social Work Degree and Masters Degree programmes
2. How many students were accepted onto either Undergraduate or postgraduate social work degrees with less than the above entry requirements through your clearing programme?
3. What percentage of your social work graduates are currently in full time employment in the field of social work?
4. A copy of the social work syllabus relating to law and policy
5. Copies of your assignment questions/exam papers for the modules on both undergraduate and post-graduate courses relating to the law and policy in the field of social work

Dear Clare,

Thank you for your FOI Request. Please see the University’s response
below.

1.       Entry requirements for your Undergraduate Social Work Degree and
Master’s Degree programmes

The entry requirements are as follows:

BSc (Hons) Social Work:

For this course, you'll need at least two A-levels and a GCSE Maths and
English at grade C. Our offers usually require a minimum of 96 UCAS points

A minimum of two full A-levels (or equivalent) is required.  Access to
Higher Education certificate (in a relevant subject) will normally require
at least 45 credits at Level 3 with average unit passes of merit overall.
Every application is considered on an individual basis.

MSc Social Work:

Typically students on this course will have a 2:1 degree. However you may
be considered if you have a 2:2 and significant experience. Social work is
both an academic and vocational course so it's important you show success
in your previous education and have experience.

Students must hold GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade C or above, or
equivalent. On the application form you must list all your qualifications.

2.       How many students were accepted onto either Undergraduate or
postgraduate social work degrees with less than the above entry
requirements through your clearing programme?

We are not able to accurately identify students who accepted a place
through clearing, and therefore cannot meet your request exactly as
defined.  However using our student records data, and as an alternative,
we can look at the number of students who started a social work degree
that entered with qualifications that didn’t meet our entry requirement.
We would not be able to provide this for academic year 2018/19 which is
due to start in September but could provide for 2014/15 through to 2017/18
(four of the years you’ve requested).

3.       What percentage of your social work graduates are currently in
full time employment in the field of social work?

Similar to the above, we are not able to provide the information above as
you request, as we do not maintain records of the current employment of
our graduates. The data we have available is from the HESA DLHE survey
which looks at the destinations of graduates 6 months after leaving, and
we could look at their employment status and field from this.  For the
timescale you mention then we can only provide information for the 2014/15
graduating cohort through to the 2016/17 cohort (3 years).

Both these requests are significant pieces of work, therefore please
confirm that you would like us to proceed?  We are happy to provide
further clarification of the information we can provide if requested.

4.       A copy of the social work syllabus relating to law and policy

Attached is the module descriptors for the law module and policy module
for BSc Social Work and the module descriptor for the law module for MSc
Social Work. There is no separate policy module for MSc, but policy is
discussed in other modules.

5.       Copies of your assignment questions/exam papers for the modules
on both undergraduate and post-graduate courses relating to the law and
policy in the field of social work

                Please see attached

6.       Whether your University has implemented any of the 18
recommendations made in Sir Martin Narey’s 2014 Report ‘Making the
Education of Social Workers Consistently Effective, and if so, which
recommendations have been implemented.

We have already implemented several of Martin Narey's university-relevant
recommendations and others will be considered during the re-validating
process in Spring 2019. Please see attached document highlighting the 18
recommendations, with our responses.
