The request was partially successful.

Laurence de Mello

Dear General Medical Council,

Since 2019, how many medical practitioners have been suspended, or had their licenses removed by the GMC in relation to Covid 19 patients, or *Covid treatments and/protocols.

And how many medical practitioners are currently under investigation by the GMC, in relation to treatment, protocols or the questioning of treatment for *Covid patients?

*(all variants)

Yours faithfully,

Dear Laurence

Your information request – IR1-3548452313

Thank you for your email dated 20 May 2022 requesting fitness to practise
information in relation to Covid. I have considered your request under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). I apologise for the delay in our
response.

Please see below a table showing the number of individual doctors with
cases relating to Covid between 1 January 2019 to 20 June 2022:

  Individual Doctors (With Cases)
Case Outcome 2020 2021 2022 Total of Doctors
Still in progress** 6 27 9 41*
Sanctions applied at Hearing - Suspension 0 0 0 0
Sanctions applied at Hearing - Erasure 0 0 0 0
Total 6 27 9 41

*The data is based on the number of unique doctors with cases opened per
year. There were 42 cases opened in this period however one doctor had
cases opened in two separate years, therefore the total number of doctors
is 41.

**There are currently no suspensions or erasures relating to Covid
resulting from a Medical Practitioners Tribunal (MPT) hearing. However, of
the 41 doctors who still have a case in progress, four doctors are
currently suspended following an Interim Orders Tribunal (IOT).

At any point during an investigation, doctors can be referred to an
Interim Orders Tribunal (IOT) at the Medical Practitioners Tribunal
Service (MPTS), An IOT looks at whether a doctor's registration should be
restricted while we undertake an investigation in the concerns raised. It
is important to note that an IOT hearing does not conclude our
investigation. Whether or not an interim order is imposed, we will
continue to investigate the allegations against the doctor. Where we
decide to refer a doctor to a hearing at the end of our investigation, an
MPT hearing will take place. You can find more information about these
different types of hearings [1]here.

I hope you find this information useful. If you have any further questions
or any concerns about your request, please contact [2][GMC request email].
