Data protection impact assessments related to redacting planning documents with large language models

Steve Messer made this Freedom of Information request to Croydon Borough Council Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

Croydon Borough Council did not have the information requested.

Dear Croydon Borough Council,

I understand that the borough is researching the application of large language models to redact personal information from planning documents. I’m pleased to hear that the borough is using fake documents that do not include real information in the testing.

However, I’d like to see any data protection impact assessments the borough has conducted. If this method were applied to real documents including real personal information, where will the data be processed and how? What legal basis would the borough use to conduct this activity under data protection legislation?

It is good to see the borough experimenting safely, and it would be excellent to see these stories published in the open as it increases trust.

Yours faithfully,
Steve Messer
