Dear Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman,

At the job interview for post of Ombudsman, Dame Julie Mellor stated:

' ......To give one example, I think where the role of the Ombudsman is talked about could be shifted. For example, I used to do lots of breakfast TV, sitting on the sofa, because you reach a much wider audience that way. That is the kind of thing that I think we could do'.

I seem to have missed seeing Dame Julie Mellor on the Breakfast TV sofa and would like to ask if she is scheduled to make any appearances 'on the sofa' in the next few months - so that I can tune in.

So has she any sofa engagements scheduled?

In view of the results of the Which survey, in which only around half of potential complainants had heard if the PHSO, will Dame Julie Mellor be upping its public profile by making more public appearances of the kind that she suggested during her interview for the post of Ombudsman?

....Just half (52%) were even aware that the PHSO exists, compared with 94% who had heard of Trading Standards and 86% who knew of the Financial Services Ombudsman.

I am writing to request an internal review of Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman's handling of my FOI request 'Dame Julie Mellor : Sofa schedule'.

Thank you for the information but my request asks about future appointments..... Not past appointments.

That is appointments that WILL be taking place, not those which HAVE.

And my request particularly alluded to Dame Julie Mellor's response to an interview question. In which she cited the aim of appealing to wider audiences, for example breakfast TV - and not remaining enclosed with MP's and other CEO's, presumably to improve the low profile of the PHSO.

I was just enquiring as to whether she is intending to do so.

I thought that Dame Julie said at the PASC meeting in December 2013 that she spent the last two years listening to members of the public. Not too many members of the public on this list.

It's mostly only a meeting a day.

So would leave her some time to sit with the review team and see how it's staff treats the bereaved - and other complainants.

The review team complaints are: Not listening to people, getting cases badly wrong - by not bothering to read them,still less understand them, refusing to accept new evidence or admit mistakes by reinvestigating ...and a lot of slamming phones down on complainants seems to have taken place.

And she might find out why the review team felt free to adopt such an arrogant attitude - possibly stemming from weak uncontactable line-management - for so long.

PHSO’s public profile 15. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman would benefit from a higher public profile and should be free to engage the public about how it exercises its remit and powers. It should publicise more information on the outcome of cases, and so contribute more effectively to public debate.

And making more tv appearances in the future, as the Welsh Ombudsman does on upheld cases.
