Criminalisation of purchase of sex

S R James made this Freedom of Information request to Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission,

On 16 January 2014, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission gave it's support to Clause 6 of the Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Further Provision and Support for Victims) Bill, which criminalises the purchase of sex.

There is a strong evidence base that criminalising the clients of sex workers negatively impacts on the human rights of sex workers, including their right to safety.

Please explain how the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission came to support the criminalisation of the purchase of sex, despite the negative human rights consequences for sex workers.

Please provide details of the sex workers and sex worker organisations the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission engaged with in consideration of the criminalisation of the purchase of sex.

Yours faithfully,

S R James

Dear Lorraine Hamill,

Thank you for your reply.

You have not however provided details of the sex workers and/or sex worker organisations the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission engaged with in consideration of the criminalisation of the purchase of sex.

Could you please specify:

(a) How many individual sex workers you engaged with?
(b) How many sex work organisations you engaged with?

and

(c) In the case of the sex work organisations you engaged with, could you please specify the names of these organisations?

If in fact you did not engage with any sex workers or sex work organisations, could you instead please confirm this to be the case?

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

S R James
