Dear City of London Police,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I am requesting the following information:

-the number of crimes committed by Italian gangs (e.g. Mafia) or Italian citizens in London in the period 2010-2013;
-the types of crime committed by Italian gangs (e.g. Mafia, in such case please provide also which business they were involved in) or committed by Italian citizens in London in the same period;
-the age and gender of the criminals;
-the specific area in which such crimes were committed.

I’m an Italian journalist and I need such information for an article looking at Italian crime abroad.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Avagnina,

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REF:  COL/14/229

I write in connection with your request for information dated 17^th March
2014 in which you seek access to the following information:

Q1. The number of crimes committed by Italian gangs (e.g. Mafia) or
Italian citizens in London in the period 2010-2013. The types of crime
committed by Italian gangs (e.g. Mafia, in such case please provide also
which business they were involved in) or committed by Italian citizens in
London in the same period; -the age and gender of the criminals; -the
specific area in which such crimes were committed.

Question 1

I can confirm information relating to Italian offenders is held by the
City of London Police and is contained in 224 records.

Information relating to the exact offence and whether the suspect was
actually an Italian and was also an offender is not held separately but is
contained in the 224 records. In order to extract this information every
record will need to be examined individually and we estimate this would
take more than 10 minutes per record. The cost of completing this work
would exceed the limit prescribed by the Secretary of State in accordance
with powers contained in Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act. The
limit is currently set at £450 and the hourly rate is set at £25. The
guidance of the Information Commissioner’s Office is that once one part of
the request exceeds the statutory limit, the whole request should be
regarded as over cost and the work has therefore not been done. However,
as stated above I have provided your answer to question 1 which I hope is
still of use to you.

Should you have any further questions regarding your request, please
contact me via e-mail, letter or telephone, quoting the reference number
above.

Kind regards,

Zak
