The request was successful.

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I wish to request
information on crime statistics at street markets in London. I would like the following:

2. The type of crime committed at each street market in London since 2012.
3. The amount of prosecutions which resulted from crimes reported in each street market in London since 2012.

If possible I would like this information to be in excel format broken down by the different markets in London.

I am happy to receive information based on what the MPS define to be a street market.

Yours faithfully,

Bryony Waite

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)

Dear Ms Waite

Freedom of Information Request Reference No: 2014010000302

I write in connection with your request for information which was received
by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) on 02/01/2014. I note you seek
access to the following information:

"1. The amount of crimes reported at  each street market in London since

information to be in excel format broken down by the different markets in
London. I am happy to receive information based on what the MPS define to
be a street market."

I note that you are interested in crimes reported at street markets. Upon
my initial search it has become apparent that there is a location code of
'CL - Market/Open Air Stall/Kiosk.' I have been informed that this would
cover the majority of markets. However, you have requested information for
every street market and this code would include Stalls and Kiosks that are
part of markets as well as those that are not. Based on this I can proceed
in one of two ways:

1. Proceed with the code 'CL' on the understanding that this will cover
the majority of markets only, OR

2. Please supply a list of addresses and postcodes of those street markets
you are interested in and our searches will be based upon those addresses.

Please advise how you wish to proceed.

Yours Sincerely

Deborah Solomon

I write in connection with your request for information which was received

On 2nd February 2014 you asked us to proceed using the markets which have
'CL' codes on the understanding that this would cover the majority of
markets only.

EXTENT OF SEARCHES TO LOCATE INFORMATION

To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted
at the Directorate of Information Reporting Services Helpdesk and data was
extracted from the Crime Recording and Information System (CRIS).

RESULT OF SEARCHES

The searches located information relevant to your request.

DECISION

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.

Please find attached information pursuant to your request above.

Please note that in relation to Question 3, it is not possible to answer
this question within the cost threshold. The information you have
requested about prosecutions is not information that the Police hold in
any structured way. The Crown Prosecution Service is the prosecuting
authority within London, not the police and they are likely to hold this
data. Once the MPS charge somebody the case is passed to the CPS who take
the case to trial. The CPS can still decline to prosecute at a later stage
and this would not necessarily be held on an MPS system. The case papers
may contain this information, however the time required to locate the case
file, review and abstract the data would far exceed the 18 hour time
limit. Locating these records would exceed the time limit and 18 hour cost
threshold stipulated by the Act and it would therefore not be possible to
comply with Section 1(1)(a) of the Act.

However we have attached data relating to people proceeded against which
is the point at which the MPS stops recording prosecution details in a
retrievable format. To this end we have included the information for the
period that relates to the CL codes for the period.

COMPLAINT RIGHTS

Your attention is drawn to the attached sheet which details your right of
complaint.

Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please write
or contact Deborah Solomon on telephone number 0207 161 4291 quoting the
reference number above.

Yours sincerely
