Coverage At Bangor

Christopher James O'Neal made this Freedom of Information request to North Wales Fire and Rescue Service

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Christopher James O'Neal

Dear North Wales Fire and Rescue Service,

I make this request under the foi procedure.

Since June 2014 can you supply me with the following information.

How many call out has a Bangor based pump responded to on Anglesey. Please give dates and incident numbers for each call.

In respect of each of these call outs when pump 1 has left bangor to respond to an incident on Anglesey where was the next pump available to cover an incident at bangor ? I.e bangor second pump, llanfairfechan, Caernarfon etc. Please confirm which station would have been on the run to cover bangor, when Bangor were busy. In this response I require the stations that were actually available and not those that could be available ie that were on the run.

Whilst I believe bangor has an incident support pump ie chemical spills etc, a water incident unit and a turn table ladder please confirm again when Bangor fire officers are busy dealing with incidents over on Anglesey were would be the nearest on the run and available water incident unit ? A chemical or environmental unit ? Or a Turntable ladder unit ?

I look forward to your answers

Regards
Chris

Yours faithfully,

Christopher James O'Neal

Brian Mottershead, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service

Dear Sir,

Further to your request below submitted under the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act, it is clear that North Wales Fire and Rescue Service
(NWFRS) will not be able to answer your request without further
clarification.

NWFRS has also received a request for information from you via its
Facebook page and clarification is required as to whether or not you
require a response to both requests and, if not, which one requires a
response.  The text of your Facebook request is as follows:

Hello North Wales Fire & Rescue Service. As a local councillor serving
Bangor I have recently had concerns brought to me about the level of cover
that is available at anyone, and the concerned person who brought the
issue to my attention also brought it to my attention about the poor level
of cover you have over our neighbouring county namely Anglesey.

I would therefore be grateful if you could be open, honest and transparent
with me and answer the following questions.

Is it true that Bangor have been responding to incidents on Anglesey as
regularly there is only one pump covering the whole of the island?

If so when Bangor do respond to incidents elsewhere which should be
covered by other stations have you then got adequate cover for the Bangor
station?

Has there been any time in the last twelve months when pump 1 out of
Bangor has been called to another area and you have not had enough
personnel to cover pump two?

Bearing in mind that Bangor would or should be first response to the
Hospital if a Turntable ladder pump was needed and Bangor crew were out
dealing with incidents elsewhere, then where would be the next turntable
ladder pump available to response?

In the last twelve months has there ever been a time where there was no
pump available on Anglesey at all?

Once you have clarified your request, NWFRSI will be able to begin to
process your request.  If clarification ids not received within three
months your request will be considered to have lapsed. (Under section
1(3) of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), a public authority need not
comply with a request unless any further information reasonably required
to locate the information is supplied).

Yours faithfully,

3.      Whilst I believe Bangor has an incident support pump i.e. chemical
spills etc., a water incident unit and a turn table ladder please confirm
again when Bangor fire officers are busy dealing with incidents over on
Anglesey where would be the nearest on the run and available water
incident unit ? A chemical or environmental unit? Or a Turntable ladder
unit?

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service uses a variety of specialist
appliances for specific types of incidents across the whole Service area:

·         Incident Response Units (IRUs) – the 2 IRUs are normally located
in Bangor and Deeside.  They are part of the national resilience response
and could be used in any part of the UK to deal with incidents where mass
decontamination was required.  Their mobilisation and use is co-ordinated
from DCLG London;

·         Environmental Protection Units (EPUs) – the 2 EPUs are normally
located in Holyhead and Wrexham.   These would be used to deal with
chemical spills;

·         Water Incident Units (WIUs) – the 4 WIUs are normally located in
Bangor, Betws y Coed, Ruthin and Deeside;

·         Aerial Ladder Platforms (ALPs) – the 3 ALPs are normally located
in Bangor, Rhyl and Wrexham.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service does not have a turntable ladder.
