Course materials and any other teaching aids for the MA in Activism and Social Change
Dear University of Leeds,
I would like to be supplied with copies of all teaching materials for the MA Activism and Social Change course you offer. This would include any lecture booklets detailing lecture titles and subjects, reading lists, support documents, course texts where available, marking criteria, PowerPoint presentations and so on.
When considering whether and how to fulfil my request, I ask that you refer to the Information Commissioner's judgment of 30 March 2009 in the case between the University of Central Lancashire and Dr David Colquhoun. You can read that decision here:
http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/d...
You may also wish to read Dr Colquhoun's blog post on the subject:
http://www.dcscience.net/?p=1364
Dr Colquhoun's blog details the various rulings at his tribunal. No doubt you will be familiar with all this already.
Yours faithfully,
Steven Smith
Dear Steven,
Many thanks for your request for information relating to the MA in Activism and Social Change.
Unfortunately, due to annual leave clashes between myself and other relevant parties, I have been unable to collate the information within the 20 working-day timeframe stipulated by the Act.
Please accept my apologies, and reassurances that your request will be dealt with as soon as I am able, but hopefully in the week commencing 25 July.
Best wishes,
Rebecca.

Dear Mr Smith,
Many thanks for your email, dated 17 June, requesting course material and
other teaching aides for the MA in Activism and Social Change.
Please accept my apologies that my response has been delayed, as explained
in my email to you on 15 July, annual leave commitments meant that I was
unable to reply earlier.
I am aware that there is much debate as to the circumstances under which
the University may be obliged to disclose course material. I believe
that in fact there are circumstances where non-disclosure would be
appropriate. In particular, certain course material may, on its facts,
represent a significant commercial interest to the University that
requires protection, justifying non-disclosure.
However, each case is to be looked at on its own merit. In this
particular instance I believe there is no significant commercial interest
to be protected, therefore please find attached all of the relevant
information, along with a table outlining what has been released. Due to
the way in which our system scans the documents you should find that there
are (in addition to the index) 5 attachments containing the information
requested. Please note that all of the information relates to the last
full academic session in which the course was taught.
If you have any queries about this email, please contact me.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision,
you should write to Mr D Wardle, The University Complaints Officer, The
University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT.
If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have
the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision. Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have
exhausted the review/complaints procedure provided by the University.
The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: Information
Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire,
SK9 5AF.
Many thanks,
Rebecca

Dear Rebecca Messenger-Clark,
Thank you for sending some of the information requested. As you probably realise the attachments you have sent do not satisfy my FoI request in its entirety.
I would be grateful to know when and if you plan to forward the rest of the documents I have asked for: for example, the teaching aids (inc. PowerPoint slides), marking criteria, etc.
Yours sincerely,
Steven Smith
Dear Steven,
The information released to date represents the body of course material that is made available to students. I have however gone back to the department and asked if they have any further teaching material particulars.
I will be in touch in due course should this be the case.
Many thanks,
Rebecca

Dear Mr Smith,
Further to your email dated 1 August, I have gone back to the department and asked them to interrogate their files for any additional information.
To this end, please find attached additional course material relating to the five core modules associated with the MA in Activism and Social Change. Detailed information on optional modules has not been included as this would, in essence, cover modules from a number of different disciplines.
Please also note that some modules, or components of modules, are taught by guest lecturers whose teaching notes are not the property of the University of Leeds and are therefore not eligible for disclosure under this request.
With regard to marking criteria, you have already been sent the central Rules for Award document, which informs the way that all schools organise marking. However I have also attached the School of Geography Taught Postgraduate Handbook for 2010-11 which may be of interest to you.
Due to the size of the attached documents, I am going to have to send them across three different emails, please let me know if you experience any difficulties in receiving them (there should be 6 attachments in total.)
Please accept my apologies that the organisation of this information has taken some time.
If you have any queries about this email, please contact me.
