Freedom of Information Act, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh

Good afternoon Simone,

I refer to your request for information on counselling services dated 14
February. Please find the requested information below.

Accessing counselling services:

Academic Students
Year
2012/3 201
2013/4 206
2014/5 222
2015/6 297
2016/7 293

The gender and year of study of students accessing the counselling service
is not held.

Requests for counselling include when a student presents with a mental
health condition that has been diagnosed or not diagnosed, and would also
include an infinite number of psychological and emotional presentations
and life issues. There is usually overlapping issues so there is no way
for the University to collate information on the discrete issues that
students are seeking help for so it is not possible to provide details on
the numbers who have sought help for the specified issues requested.

We do not have a suicide prevention strategy. However, we have introduced
the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy in 2016.

We have also trained one quarter of all QMU staff in mental health first
aid (suicide prevention is covered as part of the course)
