Counselling for students

The request was successful.

Dear Durham University,

Under the Freedom of Information Act, please could you provide me with the number of students who have accessed counselling services provided by the university for each of the past three academic years (2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17).

Dear Ms Miller

Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below in response to your
questions.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, please could you provide me with the
number of students who have accessed counselling services provided by the
university for each of the past three academic years (2014/15, 2015/16 and
2016/17).

If possible, please provide a breakdown by the type of issue the students
are seeking help for.

Academic Year Number of Students
2014/2015 1500
2015/2016 1582
2016/2017 1404

Please see the attached document, noting that after the initial
counselling session the counsellor codes the main presenting issue(s)
according to a nationally recognised classification called the Association
for University & College Counselling (AUCC).   Counsellors can list up to
three presenting issues per student, and it is their subjective choice as
to the main reasons for presentation, hence there are more ‘presenting
issues’ in the attached table than there were students attending the
service.  We also attach the list of codes for your reference.

If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied.  To do
this, please email [1][Durham University request email] or write to:

further.  We aim to inform you of our decision within 20 working days from
the date your request for internal review is received.

If you are not satisfied with the results of the internal review you may
apply to the Information Commissioner's Office for an independent review.
