Councillors email communications.

The request was successful.

Dear Isle of Wight Council,

Please supply me with the following information:

1. Does the Council provide councillors with an email facility which allows them to receive and send email using your council's email address?

2. If you do have such a facility are councillors able to access the system from their home or other remote location?

3. Does the Council provide councillors with computer equipment and an Internet connection facility which allows them to receive and send email using your council's email address?

4. Does the Council allow email sent to councillors to be
auto-forwarded to unsecure external email addresses such as
hotmail?

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Cook

Mr. Figg left an annotation ()

I see the IW council haven't objected to answering questions on this request.

Consistency is hardly their strong point as they refused to do so on both of these.

The councils response:

21 August 2013

Dear Madam

INFORMATION REQUEST CRM REF. iw13/8/35819

Thank you for your information request dated the 21 August 2013.

You made the following request:-

Does the Council provide councillors with an email facility which allows them to receive and send email using your council's email address?

The Council does provide Councillors with an email facility

If you do have such a facility are councillors able to access the system from their home or other remote location?

Councillors are able to access the system from their home or other remote location

Does the Council provide councillors with computer equipment and an Internet connection facility which allows them to receive and send email using your council's email address?

Councillors are provided with equipment in County Hall. This authority also provides equipment for use from Councillors homes, but NOT an internet connection. Council Blackberry mobile phones are also available to Members enabling Members to access the internet wherever there is an appropriate mobile phone signal.

Does the Council allow email sent to councillors to be auto-forwarded to unsecure external email addresses such as hotmail?

Depending on the content of the email, this could potentially be in breach of our policy on data protection and therefore, depending on the content of the email, is not allowed.

If you have any complaints in respect of your information request, please write to the Corporate Information Unit at the above address or complete the on-line appeals form that can be found at www.iwight.com/information. If your complaint is not resolved to your complete satisfaction, you have the ultimate right, once you have exhausted the internal appeals process, to appeal to the Information Commissioner.

Thank you for your swift response in answering my questions, I was expecting another refusal on the grounds that the Act doesn't require that you answer questions.

One query, on question 3. Does the Council provide councillors with computer equipment and an Internet connection facility which allows them to receive and send email using your council's email address?

You replied

Councillors are provided with equipment in County Hall. This authority also provides equipment for use from Councillors homes, but NOT an Internet connection. Council Blackberry mobile phones are also available to Members enabling Members to access the Internet wherever there is an appropriate mobile phone signal.

Does that mean Councillors can use their Blackberrys at home to access the Internet and send emails, assuming of course they are able to get a signal, and you say that although the Council supply equipment for councillors to use at home but don't supply an Internet connection. Do you pay the land-line line rental for Councillors?

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Cook
