Council tax will double for low-income families - Citizen's Advice Bureau

We're waiting for Hazel O'Leary to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear North East Lincolnshire Council,

Grimsby Telegraph (15 December 2017)

http://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news/g...

"Council tax will double for low-income families - as Tories try to reduce support even further"

The Chief Executive of the North East Lincolnshire Citizen's Advice Bureau spoke out about a rise in the number of people going into council tax arrears. The comments were made in respect of the council's current council tax support scheme which he considers should be tailored to help individuals rather than groups.

The inadequate council tax support scheme is not the only cause of people going into council tax arrears unnecessarily.

Where there is a previous year's Council Tax liability outstanding, the council's policy is to allocate odd payments made by the customer to the oldest liability, raising the risk of the in year account being subject to recovery with additional unnecessary costs causing further hardship. Whilst this approach is taken by a minority of councils, the majority make it their priority to allocate payment to the liability that is most beneficial to the account holder (in accordance with law), which is generally the current year's tax to avoid it falling into the recovery cycle.

What if any information is provided by the council to the Citizen's Advice Bureau in order for their officers to best advise customers seeking help regarding hardship they face which is attributed to Council Tax payment misallocation?

Yours faithfully,

Hazel O'Leary

Dear PPD - FOI,

My request was for the information (if any) that was provided to the Citizen's Advice Bureau to enable it to best advise customers seeking help regarding hardship they face which is attributed to Council Tax payment misallocation. The only issue under consideration was whether there was any information provided.

It therefore seems to be unclear whether the request has been properly dealt with as the response has been provided on the basis that the relevant department within the council is perfect and no payments are misallocated.

Will you please bear the above in mind and make your response strictly relevant to the request.

Yours sincerely,

Hazel O'Leary
