Nandini Naira Archer

Hi there,

I am writing to request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act.

1) What was the maximum amount the council budget allowed to be paid out in the form of a ‘leaving care grant' (sometimes also called a setting up home allowance) in the 2022-2023 financial year?

2) How many young people left the care of your council on or after their 16th birthday in the 2022-2023 financial year?

3) How many of these young people received a leaving care grant?

4) What was the average amount (both mean and median) paid out to care leavers in a leaving care grant in the 2022-2023 financial year?

5) What was the lowest amount paid out to a care leaver in a leaving care grant in the 2022-2022 financial year?

6) What was the highest amount paid out to a care leaver in a ‘leaving care grant’ in the 2022-2023 financial year?

Yours faithfully,

Dear Ms Archer

Freedom of Information request:  FOI-320

Thank you for your request dated 21 August 2023

Our response is as follows:

1)What was the maximum amount the council budget allowed to be paid out in
the form of a ‘leaving care grant' (sometimes also called a setting up
home allowance) in the 2022-2023 financial year?

Total amount that can be paid is £2000

2) How many young people left the care of your council on or after their
16th birthday in the 2022-2023 financial year?

111 children left care after their 16^th birthday in 2022/23. 95 of those
were eligible for a care leaving service.

3) How many of these young people received a leaving care grant?

78 Children received at least one instalment of £500
32 Had the full £2000 within the year

4) What was the average amount (both mean and median) paid out to care
leavers in a leaving care grant in the 2022-2023 financial year?

The Leaving care grant is paid in 4 instalments so they would receive £500
each time. This could be paid all within one financial year or it may
straddle two financial years, depending on the circumstances of each care
leaver.

5) What was the lowest amount paid out to a care leaver in a leaving care
grant in the 2022-2022 financial year?

See question 4

6) What was the highest amount paid out to a care leaver in a ‘leaving
care grant’ in the 2022-2023 financial year?

See question 4
