Dear Hannah Jewell,
Re: Freedom of Information Request, Oxford City Council – Reference: 11712
Our sincere apologies for the delay in answering your request, and any resulting inconvenience caused.
Further to our acknowledgement, I can respond to your Freedom of Information Act 2000 request
received on 16th January 2023 as follows:
Your Request:
Please treat this as a Freedom of Information/Environmental Information Regulations request. I would
like information about your council’s electricity sources in relation to climate action for the Council
Climate Action Scorecards. This information may be held by an estates department or similar.
In particular, please supply me with information relating to the following questions:
a. Does the council have a 100% renewable green electricity tariff for all of the electricity that the
council is directly responsible for, and is this tariff with Green Energy UK plc, Good Energy
Limited or Ecotricity? This includes all electricity that the council is directly responsible for, in
council offices and any other buildings leased and managed by the council where the council
pays the electricity tariff. This does not include homes owned or managed by the council. If
unsure, please state your provider and tariff.
b. Does the council generate and use energy from waste? And if so, what percentage of the
council’s total electricity use is powered by these energy from waste electricity sources?
c. Does the council buy directly from a local renewable electricity source or have its own
renewable electricity sources? And if so, what percentage of the council's total electricity use is
powered by this/these renewable electricity sources? This includes council owned renewable
electricity sources that are located outside of the council area, such as solar farms located further
south to maximise electricity generation.
Our Response:
a. Does the council have a 100% renewable green electricity tariff for all of the electricity that the
council is directly responsible for, and is this tariff with Green Energy UK plc, Good Energy
Limited or Ecotricity? This includes all electricity that the council is directly responsible for, in

We do not currently have a 100% renewable green electricity tariff covering Oxford City
Council’s electricity supplies. Currently, we have no supply contracts with Green Energy UK plc,
Good Energy Limited, or Ecotricity. Both Good Energy Limited and Ecotricity currently provide
services to Oxford City Council, but this is for low spend value, and there are no formal supply
contracts in place.
b. Does the council generate and use energy from waste? And if so, what percentage of the
council’s total electricity use is powered by these energy from waste electricity sources?
No – Oxfordshire County Council are responsible for handling waste from Oxford City, and the
nearest ERF at Ardley is operated by Viridor on a long-term contract with Oxfordshire County
Council. Therefore, waste from within our jurisdiction is used to generate electricity, but not by
Oxford City Council. If you wish for a more detailed answer from Oxfordshire County Council,
their Freedom of Information team can be contacted via email
at xxx@xxxxxxxxxxx.xxx.xx.
Oxford City Council is exploring options for purchasing directly from local renewable electricity
sources. We have invested in on-site solar PV across Oxford City Council’s estate since 2008, and
these systems generate the equivalent of approximately 15% of our annual electricity usage.
If you disagree with any part of the response to your request, you are entitled to ask the Council for an
internal review of the decision(s) made. You may do this by writing to the Monitoring Officer, by either
email –
xxxxx@xxxxxx.xxx.xx – or by post to Monitoring Officer, Oxford City Council, St Aldate’s
Chambers, St Aldate’s, Oxford, OX1 1DS. After the result of the internal review, if you remain
dissatisfied, you may ask the Information Commissioner to intervene on your behalf. You may do this
by writing to the Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
Yours sincerely,
Freedom of Information Officer
