Council Climate Change Action Scorecard and 20mph speed limits

The request was successful.

Dear Sheffield City Council,

One of the criteria in the Council Climate Change Action Scorecard is a Local Authority's commitment to a 20mph speed limit on restricted roads.  Local Authorities in Wales and in Scotland will soon be implementing 20mph as a national norm.

In order to assess progress towards 20mph in England, 20's Plenty for Us requests answers from Sheffield City Council to the following:

1. Do you have plans in place to make 20mph the norm or default speed limit for most restricted roads?

2. Have you requested the UK Government to set 20mph as the default speed limit for restricted roads in England?

3. Are you committed to Vision Zero as part of your traffic/transport strategy?

Yours faithfully,

Adrian Berendt

Thank you for your request for information relating to Council Climate
Change Action Scorecard and 20mph speed limits which we received on

Please find Sheffield City Council’s response to your request set out
below:

 1.  Do you have plans in place to make 20mph the norm or default speed
limit for most restricted roads?

Sheffield City Council has had the ‘Sheffield 20mph Speed Limit Strategy’
in place since 2012, the long-term aim of which is to establish 20mph as
the maximum speed in appropriate residential areas of Sheffield. A copy of
the strategy is attached.

 2. Have you requested the UK Government to set 20mph as the default speed
limit for restricted roads in England?

No, we have not. The DFT issues guidance to us. Sheffield City Council has
had the ‘Sheffield 20mph Speed Limit Strategy’ in place since 2012, the
long-term aim of which is to establish 20mph as the maximum speed in
appropriate residential areas of Sheffield.

 3. Are you committed to Vision Zero as part of your traffic/transport
strategy?

Yes, we are committed to Vision Zero. As part of the South Yorkshire
Partnership, we are adopting a ‘Vision Zero’ approach, working towards no
deaths or serious injuries on the roads. Please see attached – South
Yorkshire Strategy to 2023 and beyond for further information. To align
with the Safe System approach and Vision Zero, Sheffield is currently
working on an action plan to align with these strategies and visions. We
are hoping to be able to publish this in the coming months.
