Costs of securing radio broadcast rights for English Premier League games

Glenn Pegden made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was refused by British Broadcasting Corporation.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

I am enquiring as to the money spent by the BBC on the securing season long rights to broadcast commentaries of English Premier League football home games for individual clubs by BBC local radio stations and the estimated average audience for the broadcasts, over the previous 5 seasons.

It has been alleged that for some clubs the money spent to secure the rights is grossly disproportional to the average audience and I would like to know how much truth there is in the statement.

I'm aware that this very close to journalism (which is except from FoA requests), but I consider this to be a financial question about broadcast rights, rather than anything to do with the contents of the broadcasts.

Yours faithfully,

Glenn Pegden
