Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,

I am submitting a FOI request to detail the following:

1) How much has the recent clearance of vegetation at West Kirby beach cost including assessments, machinery, personnel and disposal costs?
2) Has the council prepared a assessment of the future costs associated with periodic clearance required to keep vegetation from regrowing?
3) How has funding been allocated to this activity?
4) Has the work been done under Natural England's assent?

Yours faithfully,

Gemma Todd

InfoMgr, FinDMT, Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council

Dear Gemma Todd

Please see below Wirral Council’s response to your enquiry.

1) How much has the recent clearance of vegetation at West Kirby beach
cost including assessments, machinery, personnel and disposal costs?

Item Cost
Habitat Regulations Assessment (HRA) £6,983
Water Framework Directive Assessment £1,800
Marine Management Organisation (MMO) Licence £5,368
Clearance contract (including machinery, personnel and disposal) £20,480
Total £34,631

2) Has the council prepared a assessment of the future costs associated
with periodic clearance required to keep vegetation from regrowing?

The operation undertaken between 20 May to 30 May 2024, is not expected to
be repeated. The operation involved clearing common cordgrass and common
saltmarsh-grass that had become established on the amenity beach due to a
cessation of raking during the COVID Pandemic. Regular raking of this area
should prevent vegetation from re-establishing in this area. However, if
it does return, under the terms of assent from Natural England Wirral
Council is permitted to return and make an assessment of what follow up
works are required.

3) How has funding been allocated to this activity?

Funding for the Clearance Contract was allocated as a part of Wirral
Councils 2024/25 budget. The cost of the HRA, Water Framework Directive
Assessment and the MMO License was met from the Parks & Countryside
maintenance budget in both 2023/24 and 2024/25.

4) Has the work been done under Natural England's assent?

Yes, Assent for this work was received from Natural England for this work
in July 2023.

Yours sincerely
