Dear South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust,

Dear Sir,

I should like to request some information about costs of providing ambulance services, and I do so under the FOI ACT.

I have seen your response to a similar request by Conor Calby of 8th May 2019 but wonder what the figures provided are based upon for I would value the service as much greater.

I confine my request to one example, the best estimate cost of responding to a 111 called emergency ambulance with a community responder being first on scene at patients home followed by a two person ambulance crew, 20-30 minutes spent assessing and treating at scene, BP measurements etc, ECG before conveyance of approx 10 miles, drugs given en route, and handover at A&E. Attendance, assessment and initial treatment plus conveyance, handover and preparing for next call must have taken well over an hour, perhaps two, for each of the crew.

Whilst I appreciate the figure given to the similar request was an 'average' of £257.83 per incident, it seems a low sum for the situation I describe which I would have thought a fairly typical type of call and response for that category. I cannot though but help think that the averaging process can on some occasions lead to misleading and undervaluing of the service provided.

May I enquire if the average is still around the same mark, and what it includes? I'm thinking staff time, call centre staff costs, vehicle and fuel, drugs and other infrastructure elements. I do not and would not wish you to go to a lot of trouble responding, an informed best guestimate will be more than sufficient for my purpose.

Whatever the cost, might I add that its appreciated and worth every penny.

Thank you

Tim Todd
