Cost to schools of ICT services provided by the local authority
Dear Monmouthshire Council,
Please can you provide a breakdown of how much each school is charged for the ICT services that are provided by the local authority, such as the schools' Internet connections, email and web filtering. Where possible, please can you breakdown these figures into charges for each individual service.
Can you also advise as to whether schools have the option to opt out of some or all of these services and keep the money that it would have cost for the local authority to provide them, in order to directly contract private companies to supply these services?
Thank you, I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
S Hill

Dear Wellington, Nicola,
Thank you for your response.
The supplied document seems somewhat unclear with respect to Internet charges and I'm hoping you could clarify it a bit:
* Section 6 lists "Internet charges" at £71 per user for "set up and configuration" and £71 per user for "Registration of school name". Are these two separate charges (i.e. totalling £142 per user), and by "user" is it referring to just members of staff or both staff and pupils?
* The bottom of section 6 talks about "Curriculum internet charges" of £75 per unit (where a "unit" appears to be a PC). Is this in addition to the above costs?
* Section 6 lists "Storage charges: £86 per gigabyte (Desktop and data storage)". Is this is the cost of provisioning a server to store staff and pupils' data and to provide backups for this data? (The term "desktop and data storage" isn't very descriptive).
Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
S Hill
Dear Wellington, Nicola,
Forgive me if I am misunderstanding the document, but it doesn't appear to actually show the amount the schools pay for their internet connectivity - it documents what ICT are responsible for (which includes connection to the WAN) and states that charges apply for WAN connectivity but the actual costs don't seem to be included?
Most local authorities have a clear calculation of the internet connection's (and ancillary services such as filtering and email) cost to schools based on their connection bandwidth and/or number of pupils, but this document doesn't seem to show anything similar.
Yours sincerely,
S Hill
I will have to pass this query on to ICT on Monday, they will contact you in due course.
